Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her grandmother and mother. She suffered from an anxiety disorder based on word associations as a young toddler. Ford's interest in acting began when she was young. She was a part of in the National Youth Theatre. She was accepted to the Sylvia Young Theatre School. After just a few weeks, she realized it was not for her. Ford returned for admission to the Central School of Speech and Drama and on the fourth time she applied she was eventually accepted. One of her classmates were Shaun Dingwall, who would play a part in the role of Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford's debut on TV was the 1991 episode Surgical Spirit. By the moment she was done with school, Ford already went by "Catherine Tate". Tate appeared in TV shows like The Bill, Men Behaving Badly as well as London's Burning during the Nineties. The stage was her main focus and was a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company's 2000-2001 season. Tate received recognition for her stand-up comedy, which became part of her resume in 1996.
